i go for bare bones so that everything and everyone can view my sites.
usability and accessibility are my primary focuses... that requires strict adherence to web standards unfortunately.
hacks have their uses and i might toe the line from time to time with a work around to two... i try to keep that to a minimum though.
i'm trying to prove to myself that good aesthetics and solid function can be available to everyone without insane hacks and special cases. it's a personal goal with this site.

Yes but in context that hack improves accessibility if anything. Audio screen readers pick it up, the Find tool picks it up...

but it breaks blackberry and other small screen devices. also the opera browser on the wii struggles with this kind of thing on occasion.
google is also picking up on this trick and degrading SEO for such practices. not much but still. they frown on anything even suggested to be "hidden".
