Because they are giants, and don't need to adhere to anything. Just like everything looks different in IE, cause Microsoft is a powerhouse and doesn't need to adhere to any "recommendation" in the community.

Exactly, what's a fewmore hundred thousand viewers to them haha
they don't give a poop

I use 1280x1024 on my laptop and 1600x1200 on PC.
I'm not by any means a pro coder, my thing is design.
I also do animated design, and 3d modeling.
I'm working on an animated advert where i find 1600x1200 is best for me.

Wasn't entirely sure on what the question was, I work on a 1280x1024 19" screen, but I develop for 1024x768. The majority of web users use 1024x768.

You could always set up some kind of template guides layer which indicates to you the three common sizes, 800x 600 - 768 x 1024 and
1280 x 1024

(Actually, to avoid both vertical and horizontal scolling you might want to go for a lower stage/artboard eg: 740 x 450 instead of 800 x 600
and so on)

Checking your content with your template from time to time enables you to see which resolution is going to see what - and on the strength of that, place important items such as navigation in the 800 x 600 area, moving outwards. Does that make sense?

Another idea would be for your site to detect the screen resolution of your user, and display the content accordingly.

Well what I tend to do is create a 750px wide wrapper to hold the entire page, so no matter what I add, it can't go astray.

And @ Kelly C.: Definitely need to consider who's gonna be viewing...

I design for 1024 x 768 although by the time you take into consideration the browser windows, sidebars, mac side bar and so on.... your design realty space is obviously not to that dimension.... ive started offering different style sheets in addition for things such as PDA's Nintendo DS and so on.... that way if someone browses the page in something other than a PC/MAC then it will pick up on this.... next big thing.... browsing on your mobile !!!
