Default Firefox image problem

I've noticed recently that firefox isn't displaying some gif (animated ones) or png images.

for example the image in this post Browser Tests

The source for it is a different colour in firebug:

Anybody have a clue why this is happening or what that washed-out colouring means?

I copypasta'd the image link into a new tab to see what it was, then the next time i viewed that post it was fine...

Very confusing.

Hotlinking, just laziness really, I do it all the time and people are wise to it.

Nah, it's not that. I first noticed the problem when looking through this story here:
Explosm.net - Interactive Stories
The images are all hosted at the same place and it's not being hotlinked, but whenever there would be an animated gif for some of the story's panels, they wouldn't show up at all. I only realised it because of the discontinuity discrepancies in the story.
