Illustrator can do alot of that sort of thing, though if you're looking for click>filter then there are probably some programs that can do that too. But the best effects take time.
Can anyone guide me as to how to add 3D effects to text ? Not like standard embossing..i mean really prominent 3D effects - to make them look blocky (for lack of a better word .. ) for example..

Thanks for the help, Don't have illustrator...and Maya is wayyyy out of my league! I thought there was probably some plugin I could use. I heard there used to be a 3d plugin for PS..

Actually, doing that in maya is very simple. You just create some text outlines and loft. Have more faith in your ability to learn.
