The article is not talking about mod_rewrite.
He makes an interesting point although the article is a little but mistitled. Rewriting correctly and rewriting are two different things and GoogleBot is a lot more persistant than people think, I have watched it crawl a lot of stuff I thought it would not.

Perhaps i should have elaborated a bit more, the article talks about re-writing dynamic or very long urls. The correct way that this should be done is at the ISAPI (Internet Server Application Programming Interface) or basically on your server. Most servers I have worked with have been Apache HTTP Servers which utilise the module mod_rewrite for this task.
