"agreement"... I bet there was some serious money involved there.

Serious money to be made yes, but surely not paid by either party.

Yahoo ad networks sucks in technical and advertiser terms and is no danger of catching up with Google, so they figure they would be better of doing a bit of arbitrage with Googles wide advertiser base and trying to keep serving results and ads good enough to stop searchers from dropping them altogether. That's basically throwing in the towel in the PPC market.

Google just want to find out exactly what the last minority of web searchers (using Yahoo) are up to so that they can "deliver" even more. We've had the toolbar, get ready for the most irresistable browser ever - this is information collection business on a grand scale, people.

The only real loser is anyone with a keen interest in healthy competition - the rest of us. Our increasingly uneasy relationship with Google is mellowed by the great free crack - sorry useful products - they keep feeding us.

I can be a bit of a Google basher but the trouble is, they also pay my bills and send my traffic. A truly modern moral puzzle.

Google are good at what they do though, you can't fault them for the the simple searches that clean up my shite spelling and come up with the right right in the top 5 - normally because those sites have used google as their benchmark for SEO and therefore 'assumed' the other engines would keep up.

Well while Yahoo and MSN are fighting Google is certainly laughing it's ass off. Deals like this were probably barely even on Google's and Yahoo's head a few years ago. But Yahoo got to the point of begging now.
