Default database question

I recently designed a site that is being hosted at a place called Blueriver. Then we had a programmer create an Administration section for us with login and password protection. He has told me that in order to upload the database files he needs a control panel. Blueriver does not offer any kind of control panel. The programmer said that the website and the database must be with the same company. Is this true? Because we usually use Dreamhost for hosting, and I was hoping that we could upload the files to Blueriver, and set up a database at Dreamhost. Dreamhost does have a control panel.

...any thoughts?

Blueriver Networking Services also provides domain hosting and registration services.

We can host your domain as well as design your site. You'll need to have either a Premium Dial Up account or a DSL account with us. Our hosting fee is $10 a month per domain plus the cost of either a Premium Dial Up account or a DSL account. All domains hosted by Blueriver come complete with virtual email addresses, email forwarding, PHP and MySQL support, however there is a standard $50 fee to set up the MYSQL permissions and tables if you need MYSQL capabilities for your site.

My mistake....it's actually Navigate, LLC.

Blueriver is a totally different website.

Navigate LLC, "Information Technology Solutions" - (502) 515-4927

I've spoken with them on the phone. They've said themselves that they don't offer a control panel.

Yeah that's a poor hosting service. Move to another quick, even the $5 a month hosting packages have decent c-panels with php and mysql database facilities.

I wish I could but my company isn't the one paying for hosting. I will try to talk the client into switching to our hosting company. So do the website files and database have to be with the same hosting company?

Yes I would advise switching if you're using a database

No, that's not true. It makes very little sense to have the database and the website on different hosts in your case, but it can be easily done.

in the following code (which he will have used in his php to connect to the mysql database)
Code:
$db = mysql_connect("localhost","username","password");
all he has to do is replace "localhost" with the address of the database. It's that simple. Ok, i've never tried it, but it SHOULD be that simple.

My hosting service is with http://www.exitblue.com/ It's perfect for what i want, quite cheap, all the bells and whistles come pre-installed and setup for you and the clincher is that the support is top-notch.

that's exactly right, as long as you are connecting with a user that has permissions on the db it wil work. also check that the mysql port is open to external servers (it may well not be) if it isn't the hosting provider might be able to offer you another port to use. they do this to prevent hackers getting in via default ports. :)
