Barcode Solution

As some of you know ive started a new job, recycling pc's.
We need to track every component that we take out of a computer, and also where it ends up. This means typing serial numbers into a database.

To save time i thought of printing barcodes for components and then scanning them in. This would be very helpful to the poor admin girl.

I stumbled upon webcam barcode scanning software, meaning we could all have a cheap webcam attached to our workstations and scan each bit as we get it, saving her work.

However i need to find software that allows me to do this and log them into say an ordinary access database or excel spreadsheet. Any ideas?

I did a thing for school where we talked about using a barcode reader. We had plans on buying one (they're not that expensive). You can plug it in using ps2 or usb. But perhaps the webcam barcode scanning software works the same way. Then you can just program a system using JDBC or something to make it work with the database. Since the barcode is just a bunch of numbers and when using the barcode reader it kinda acts like a keybord and prints the numbers on your screen. It shouldn't take too long.

You'll need Data Acquisition Software.. there are several out there and some free. Look for one that integrates with the application of your choice.

WinWedge is also one I have seen in action, it's not cheap but is is quite easy to set up and use
