I would recommend PHP and MySQL to do something like this as well. I have done a couple of shopping site using PHP and MySQL (none using a shopping cart though). As greg said, you have to use a dynamic language to talk with MySQL and to do this, I would say PHP is your best bet.

true about all of the above.

why not use mambo which has a shopping cart plug-in.

it's open source, so it's free !!!

loads of tutorials on the web as well as forums just on mambo.

Russ, why use a CMS for a personal site?

It started off with me delving into the mambo world of cms to see what it was like and how easy it was, so i designed my own site to see how it would look.

as you may be aware from other posts I am in the middle of a new design as even though mambo is great, you can get very deep into the links you create, and in the process make a rod for your own back, so i am going back to basics and starting with a nice clean fresh site. ( i keep trying each evening, but i get caught up in all the posts and then get nothing done.)

Why not take mambo's home page as a design start, full page, repeating image across, logo, simple tab nav, side advert panel and not a lot else. Good start.

sure.. ha-ha... Blame it on Toon for creating such a compelling site. Admit it, you got the same disease we all get.. putting yourself behind others. I'm willing to bet yours is the last one you'll get done.
It's OK man... I'm as guilty as anyone out here.

Why not create a forum based site where you will be compelled to work on it all day everyday?

Because I would love to be able to do that but at the moment I have a full time sales account managers job, with nearly 400 customers to look after and a turnover forcast of £1.3m in the next 12mths, so i tend to be tied up with a lot of admin when i get home at 5pm ish, like quotes and enquiries.

stress & pressure = Life
