Default Are you using PNG yet

I was just wondering how many people if any have made the move from JPeg to PNG now that most software and browsers support them with full alpha channel compliance.

For me personally there is no need to move to PNG as most people have a fast connection and file size really don't matter anymore.

I prefer png... and i disagree, I think that file size does matter, and that just because "most" people have a highspeed connection is not a valid reason to bloat the web.

This was injected "moderation"

That seems to me to be a slightly odd thing to say, given that continuous tone PNG image files are generaly larger than JPG files

Arkady, what program do you use to manipulate your png files?

my experience with photographs is that the png's file size will go from say 400kb (jpeg) --> 2000kb (png32).

Perhaps he was thinking of png8 compression which is more similar to how Gif's are compressed and usually results in reduced filesize.

Surely png's are used when an image is using minimal colours/grads and is a replacement for a gif not a jpeg?

that is one good place to use it.. but png's are also similar to psd files in that you can save all your layers and such in it.

png's are fat little piggies.
jpg's are sleek race horses.

but you can obviously have an overweight horse and a skinny pig.... but that is rare.

Although PNG was originally designed to replace GIF the eventual spec made it a possible alternative (not replacement) for Jpeg and Tiff as well. The main advantages as far as web use goes I would have thought, are lossless compression, gamma correction and even more important, alpha channel transparency in a 24/32 bit fully supported image format
