Default Microsoft starts Vista hard sell

Microsoft has launched its latest version of Windows, called Vista, with more than 100m computers predicted to be using it worldwide within 12 months.

The new operating system (OS) is on sale in four home versions, boasting an improved interface and security tools.

But not all PCs will be able to run Vista - Microsoft recommends machines have at least 512Mb of RAM, a 800Mhz processor and 15Gb of hard disk space.

Default Vista 'most secure ever' - Gates

Windows Vista is "dramatically more secure than any other operating system released", Microsoft founder Bill Gates has told BBC News.

Mr Gates said the security features in the new operating system were reason enough to upgrade from Windows XP.

Microsoft launched Vista in London, with more than 100m computers predicted to be using it within 12 months.

Mr Gates also defended the pricing of Vista, which is twice as expensive in Europe compared to the US.

The technology leader called the launch a "big day" that would bring a new digital workstyle and lifestyle.

Default Hackers' break Microsoft's new Vista

Microsoft boss Bill Gates today launched a new version of the Windows computer operating system, promising it would "take things to a whole new level".

He claimed Windows Vista would revolutionise everything from how we make telephone calls to how we watch television.

But some have already claimed to have exposed problems in the system.

Alex Ionesco, a security researcher in Montreal, has released technical details of a hack he's developed for Windows Vista.

But he has not released source code because he claims to be nervous of violating US law, it has been reported.

Meanwhile, unveiling the consumer version of the successor to Windows XP at the British Library in London, Mr Gates predicted a world where television was personalised and students worked without paper textbooks.

He said: "We're just at the beginning of that. We've just begun to see what we can do."

While Microsoft won plenty of headlines around the world with the launch, it has also been condemned by the Green Party, which predicts a mass dumping of old PCs as people find they need new hardware to run Vista. With Kaspersky Labs also criticising Vista's security protection, it's clear that Vista will be high on the tech news agenda for many months.

Rumor has it that if you play Micro$oft Vista Discs backwards you'll hear Satanic messages.

Worse still, is that if you play them forwards they will install Windows.

...the old ones are always the best ;)
