The PC I'm trying to sort has a virus attached to a .avi file, trouble is I can't delete the file as it is in use on startup, can you do a safe boot like on a mac when no system files are used so I can delete this file?

"F8" at start up should do it.

You might also try running SpyBot on it...

I've got bit defender (paid) and search and destroy and they can clean the file but won't delete it. It works fine until I go anywhere near the file, even a right-click to delete it and it kicks in.

That's odd.. F8 is almost ALWAYS the option.. sometimes it is an F5 or F10 but usually only on proprietary machines...

oh well.. this is the long way about it then.
  • While in Normal mode, Close all programs.
  • Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
  • In the System Configuration Utility, on the General Tab, click the Advanced Button
  • In the Advanced Troubleshooting Settings dialog box, check Diagnostic Startup Menu. Click OK. Click OK again when the System Configuration Utility reappears.
  • You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes. The computer will restart in Safe mode.
  • When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again and uncheck "Normal Start-up Menu." under the Advanced Menu, then click OK and restart your computer

this is how you will force the computer to reboot in Safe Mode..

Choose "Diagnostic Startup" and click OK...
then on reboot it should go into Safe Mode.
After you're done deleting the file in Safe Mode.. run this MSCONFIG again.. and select "Normal" and it should reboot as regular.
