It's the place to be if you want to beat the rush for the next big thing in gadgets – a singing robotic bust of Elvis Presley anyone?

The 'WowWee Alive Elvis' gives a plausible rendition of eight classics including Love Me Tender and Hound Dog, and is just one of thousands of exhibits at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

First held in 1967 with 200 TV and radio makers hawking their wares, the show is now the world's largest annual consumer technology extravaganza, with 2,700 exhibitors.

Highlights this year include the SXGen smart phone. The device has a fold-out keyboard, a 20 gigabyte harddrive and 256 megabyte memory. With Microsoft Office loaded, it costs £1,400.

Elsewhere there is a floor lamp which doubles as a surround-sound speaker, a pad similar to a mouse mat which charges mobile phones, and a holder to use your iPod underwater – if you really want to.

There is even a technology that lets emergency vehicles automatically change traffic lights.
