Eight firemen use chocolate coated mini camera to find missing hamster


Eight firemen armed with hi-tech rescue equipement in the form of a miniature camera coated in chocolate spent five hours searching in vain for a family's missing hamster.


The two fire crews were called out to find Fudgie the hamster after it escaped from its cage and disappeared under the kitchen floor of a house.
They took the family cooker apart during the search and also put a mini-camera coated with chocolate underneath the flooboards in a bid to tempt Fudgie.
They also tried to retrieve the runaway hamster using a vacuum cleaner with a sock over the nozzle.
But despite their efforts they failed to recover Fudgie and the task has now been handed over to the Scottish SPCA.
The small animal made a bid for freedom while the Appleby family was looking after it for a friend during school holidays.
Angela Appleby, a nursery nurse, said she had to reassure worried neigbours when two fire engines pulled up outside her home in Dunbar, on the south east coast of Scotland on Monday afternoon.
She added: "We came down for breakfast and discovered Fudgie had opened the top lid of her cage and she had made her way into the kitchen and we reckon she has gone through the smallest of holes in the kickboards where the units are.
"My manager's fiancé is in the fire brigade and the conversation snowballed into the fire brigade coming round to the house.
"There was eight firemen and also a special care unit so they had a camera to locate where Fudgie was."
But despite their efforts they failed to recover Fudgie and the task has now been handed over to the Scottish SPCA.
Mrs Appleby said she believed the hamster had made a new home under the floorboards, adding: "The firefighters were excellent and tried everything they could. The drama that tiny animal has caused is unbelievable.
"Zoe has been really keen on having a pet but it hasn't put her off, we would just do it a bit differently and we just hope Fudgie comes out."
A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said: "The call related to a hamster that was trapped behind a wall.
"They got a Fibroscope camera and put that down under the floorboards to see if they could find it. In the end we left it in the hands of the SSPCA."
