I don't think the Google Logo is that bad, but not great either. Just nothing special.
I'm curious what google thinks of there own logo as it is impossible for them to change it.

When huge amount is invested by company for branding then simple logo will become super brand. Same with google logo its very simple but now it become super brand :)

google are more about functionality than the look of there stuff really. There logo (although its far from the greatest) its simple.

It has achieved it's purpose, instant recognition and brand awareness! Isn't that what you want your logo to achieve?

I don't mind their logo so much, but I don't care for the new favicon. The 'g' just doesn't seem to suit it.
What might be interesting would be a little in-forum Google redesign competition? I don't know if this would be an issue due to copyright laws? But it would just be no-prize, just for fun, so it doesn't seem like it would be.
Just a thought. :)
