It really depends. Sometimes you only want your logo to stick out from competitors, not be completely original.
That said, I think it is possible to be fairly original. I haven't seen anything much like the logo I designed for myself.
A great article from David Airey on originality...
Just how original is your logo design? : David Airey :: Creative Design ::
Originality is a term that many of my graphic design clients use. Of course it’s perfectly acceptable to want a logo design that has never been seen before and that never will be seen again.
However, as a designer, just how original do you think it’s possible to be?
With the most honest intent in the world, we are all subjected to an incredible amount of advertising throughout our day. You might believe that this doesn’t affect your thinking, but subliminal advertising holds a lot of power.
Here’s the thing, in order to be as original as possible, many people will totally over-complicate their logo design. For a logo design to be effective however, it needs to be simple (something I touch upon in my What makes a great logo? article).

Hard to say, nowadays it's pretty hard to do different logos that actually 'look' nice. As an example, the 2012 logo (or whatever year that was) which tried to be different.
Originality is quite hard to achieve..especially when there's so much data all around us.
