You probably don't want to hear this but just keep practising would be my advice, pick local companies and work on updating there logo's.

There are many things about what makes a good logo. The main things is as El Peligroso and Linda above said are practice, practice and practice and keep looking at other good logos, seeing what makes them special, the relations between the type and the graphic.
(This may sound a bit daunting but...) What you need to think of when you start designing a logo is what the logo is about, what you want it to represent and how it will be used within the branding. It is a symbol, an image that represents a company or organisation. A good source of examples of logos and good design in general are all these books that showcase examples of what is considered good design, a lot of them are dedicated just on logos. Browing the portfolios of design agencies is good idea as well, as having apeek at the design magazines to see what is going on at the time. Finally, like andysshot said, it's not so much something that is "taught" as in a classroom, you practice and you need to have some sense of harmony because a lot of the times it can be very intuitive. I hope this was useful and I haven't put you off, it comes to you in time just work on it and enjoy the process! |

Got to say it's one of the many things you've either got it or you haven't.
The ability to be able to associate a company name with a brand and think the thing up in it's entirety and to execute it in a unique and professional manner. Practice is one thing but some people just have the ability and others just want the ability. |

Have a look at just one of the competitions at logosauce and you can tell the good from the bad in an instance and then view their profiles and you'll see who's got it and who hasn't...
