Default Career change: Advice needed for constructing a design folio.

Hi Guys,

I graduated in 2007 with:

Pg Dip Creative Advertising
BA Hons Illustration

I am hoping to transfer the skills i've acquired during the course of my higher education into a graphic design career. (Particularly problem solving and the conceptual challenges attached to tackling a brief).

I've read around the theoretical aspect of graphic design and its application in society, so i have some knowledge of it's contextual aspect. But i want to know more about the creation of the folio itself particularly with regards to landing a junior role in today's industry.

The question i want to ask is: What kind of parameters are attached to creating a graphic design folio for todays industry?

The main reason i ask this is because there are some hard and fast rules associated with the creation of a successful illustration folio.
Ie. It is not advised to produce a multi faceted folio that incorporates all kinds of illustration- (for self marketing purposes).

I just need some kind of clear guidelines on this matter... So far the people i have asked directly have either been too ambiguous or referred me to design resources that swamp me with a sea of information and links.

It would be much appreciated if anyone knows of any good web sources/articles specifically detailing this kind of information. Even just some pointers on things to look out for/ include in a design folio would be of assistance. 'The content' is the issue for me.

For the record, the area of Graphic design i'm most interested in breaking into at the moment is Logo Design and Poster Design.

Thanks.

I have always found Computer Arts : Projects a valuable magazine to have each month. They have each issue dedicated to a particular area, and oyu can order back-issues as well. Try Computer Arts - Home for more info.
