Hello
Hi all, I'm new here and would like to ask some advice with my first post...
I've recently completed a logo design for a completely new company and their company stationery is in the process of being printed. My partner has just typed up some terms and conditions with regards to the use of the logo, along with a pricing structure for the website that I am in the middle of designing. Anyway, what I wanted to ask is what stance do you take with regards to designing logos? So far, I have submitted nothing but jpegs created from the artwork designed in Illustrator and have always avoided sending PDFs or any other vector-based artwork to any of my clients, for fear of them going elsewhere with it. If you design a logo, am I right in saying that you give your client a license to use it on any company branding and that copyright remains with yourself? If they were to ask for the 'original' vector-based artwork then am I right in saying that a further fee can be charged for the release of that logo? I'm sorry if this thread doesn't quite make sense but I'm hoping that you will get the gist of what I'm trying to ask! Many thanks, Ian_G

welcome to the boards, I assume copyright can remain with whoever it says in the contract. The clause could be the copyright and ownership of this logo does not pass onto the buyer until the agreed price is paid in full. Hope that helps.

welcome, I would agree with the above they are paying for the copyright in the agreed price.

Sorry, yes, I would also agree that they are paying for copyright but isn't it common practice that if the logo were to be released then there would be an additional fee?
I kind of treat this scenario in the same way as if you purchased a font. You have the license to use the font on whatever you like, but you don't OWN that font, the copyright remains with the designer. Never been that good at explaining myself, especially after several strong Polish lagers!!

A font though is created to be used by lots of different people the creater maintains copyright to keep making money, but a bespoke design for a specific person I would think the ownership is given up when the final design is handed over and payment recieved.
