Default Is Creativity All You Need?

Hey there to all my fellow creatives. Im new to this forum, got a fair amount of experience working in the media and creative industry! Graphics, Animation and Video Production are my muscles!

Question To All: Being just a creative....is it enough anymore? Do we need to get business smart and prepare ourselves for all the politics that come with it?
Can we still be as creative with all this bogging us down? or am I just being artsy fartsy!

Manj

Yeah, it's a temperamental artist thing. Getting Real: Embrace Constraints

Designers, making a distinction between designer and artist, are about embracing the constraints by overthrowing the tyranny of "Or" and finding the genius of "And."

It depends. I work for an agency where I don't need to concern myself with anything business-y. But if you're freelance you really need some acumen in order to excel. You can probably make it without too much business know how, but you may struggle.

Welcome, btw.

I'd say you DO need to balance creative with other skills. It's worth absorbing as much of the people around you and their roles because sooner or later, they might go and someone might need to pick up that slack. Its also good for starting out on your own, however random it might be.

The other part is that the creative should always be guided by the budget/time to some degree. Even if you allow the craziest arse idea to form, eventually you'll have to bring it into line with the budget and time constraints. On this comes the audience, and understanding how they interact with graphics. Prime example here was someone designing a dl flyer for a healthclub - not seeing the obviously thing that only the top 1/3 is visible while in its holder. Therefore the design failed...simple by having nothing attention grabbing in the top section...

In shor, creative is not enough - it needs to be intelligent creative to work.

Welcome to the forum!

Personally, I am completely uninterested in the business side of things. But I think to have a grasp on that sort of stuff is very beneficial. I say just do what makes you happy and successful, and if it means learning that stuff, then go for it! Whatever drives you!
