The word "great" can have a lot of different meanings. However the question "what makes a design great?" can be useful. Here are a variety of sites to consider...
Great Interaction Design You don't have to know what Fitt's Law or HCI is to appreciate great interaction design. Not flashy, not necessarily pretty, these sites try to do good things for users. hellocode Very good examples of Flash interaction design and not a bad way to set up a portfolio. Whichbook.net Computers are logic-based, and so are the controls programmers choose. People searching for books might want a book with a certain feel to it. Enter the affective control and desirability design. Completely befuddles programmers how it works. They can make the controls -- no problem -- they just can not fathom how it does what it does. (Hint: Not bad if you want a barrier to competition.) Don'tclick.it A mouse based interface with no clicks -- makes you think in a different way. |

Don'tclickit is quite an interesting project. I can see it being fun in a game/design site application, but potentially disastrous in online banking and e-commerce.... somebody accidentally bumps into your chair, your mouse swirls around, and tada! - you've made a $50, 000 transfer to one of your beneficiaries.

Maybe I was overstepping in posting this. Let me take a step back and explain. Any technique can be misapplied, which is why interaction design is different from general website construction. It's often not the tool but how it's used which is the problem.
I can see this clickless interaction idea is a problem. Let's take an actual interaction design problem and see how it could apply. UrbanMapping is a fairly unusual product -- a lenticular paper map. There are three maps layered on top of each other, and how you tilt the map determines which one you see. As you might imagine, this is a difficult product to communicate. See how the Flash example uses a clickless interaction. Interaction design can provide a powerful set of tools, but you have to appreciate what each one can and can't do before you put it into your toolkit. |

Wasn't pop-up blockers a god send, remember when pop-ups first came about, they came from eveywhere.
