It is indeed not a question to be answered by a simple answer. There are some many ways in webdesign. Are you going to do design only? Are you going to code? What language will you use to code etc.
Basically, start with designing websites, if you like to also build them, do it! Make sure you read up on CSS and other articles on how to build good websites.
So, now you have a site and you notice that you won't stuff to be more dynamisc like news. Pick a server-language (PHP is pretty neat. I use it).
The other day, you saw this animation and wanted one too. Download a trail version of Flash and learn how to use it.
The best thing about 'just doing it', you will soon enough find out which parts you like and which parts you don't. If you don't like to do all, use others to compensate for that. Do those thing that gets you happy when you are doing it.
Want to be good at what you do? Read up on articles, find the pro's in the field. Learn from them, they usually share a lot of insights. Also read up on the not so famous, there are some pretty good coders who do magical stuff, but just for the magic. Stay focussed on your playfield, what new trends are emerging and pick the ones you could be offering to your customers.
This is pretty much a part of my story. I thought i had a clue when i started, and i did , but a few years down the road i have adjusted my path a bit. The most important thing i did 'I just did it', and one thing led to the next.
If you have any question. Use the board. If you have new things to share, use the board.
Good luck grasshopper! ;)
