Default First website for a client

Hey guys,

First of all, I apologise if this has already been asked, but I couldn't find it on here.

I've just got a request to make a website for a client. Now, this will be my first ever website for someone else. It's going to be quite a small website (about 8 pages) so it shouldn't be too difficult to make. What I want to know is, what do I do once I've designed and created the website. Do I send the files to the client, or do I upload them myself? And how would the client go about making changes/updates the the site?

Any help you can give will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

well it depends on whether they have a domain name and/or hosting or whether they want you to host it for them. sending them the files is ok if they have their domain name and hosting and an IT literate person to upload it for them.

regarding making updates themselves, i take it they would just be text updates? if so they can just use notepad or any html editor

I would upload it yourself then you have more control over it. If they want to change stuff you will need to build in a CMS this will increase the price alot.

I know a few people who overcharge for CMS systems on purpose so the client needs the designer to update their sites at a cost.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I really don't much about the project. I just wanted to ask now so I can get everything I will sorted. Next time I speak to them, I will find out whether they have a domain and hosting, although I doubt they do.

As for the CMS, I am doing the whole thing for free (to build my portfolio) so not sure whether CMS would be an option. I presume it will just be text updates, so I could just send them the files and let them edit the html as and when its needed.

Cheers guys
