Default Design for people with low vision

Hi everybody,

I will be working on a printed newsletter for people with low vision (not blind), and I was wondering if anyone would have some experience to share on projects for this kind of audience.

Thanks,
Dyango

shall I say - XXXXTRA Large Font type!! That is the only thing that I can think of that you would have to focus on. I don't have any print experience, but my current boss has catarax on her eyes; so, we can't have any designs with bad color combinations (like two colors of orange that are close to the same color - yet not the same - but she will think they are the same color. ) or subtle opacity settings - like 10% - make it a minimum of 50%. Just some thoughts.

the RNIB has a pack called 'See it Right' and has various guidelines on their site for designing for people with visual issues. Its a thing that everyone should take a look at.

The basic thing about it is simply to design well. The guidelines are matched to those of any book on good typography.

As a guide, its 14pt text with at least 2pts of leading. (ie 14/16) which should give you what you need.

I know css colours switching started of as a little bit of a novelty but many sites have it installed now for color impared users.

Thanks to everybody that has answered and give some advice. I think that this is an interesting topic to discuss, among web or print designers.

no problem. It has some very good info for the print side of things and also resources for web. Of course if you a business and your website is not accessible, its not only your customers your losing. it could be money as you can technically be sued under the disability discrimination act. Government sites fall mainly into it and there are a few of those falling below par right now.
