Image use? - (searched archives for an answer)

Greetings all,

Newbie here (in every sense) looking for a quick word of advice. I've searched through the forums and not found an answer.

I've been designing logos for myself for a while now and been getting good responses from friends I know who are already in the design industry. I'm looking for a change of career and thought I'd try to earn some money from a passion and get into design as a profession. I've come across a bit of a stumbling block though.

When designing as a hobby, purely for myself to keep my skills free of cobwebs, copyright was never an issue. However, I've been asked to design a logo for a website and am getting a bit edgy about what images I can use and how I can use them.

Looking for a photo that I can turn into a silhouette vector and taken a scan through shutterstock and istock. I've found images that would be suited perfectly for this logo but when reading through both websites' license agreements found they specifically prohibit the use of images in logos as a matter of course.

I guess my question would be, where do you find images that can be used in a logo?

Probably advertising my naiveity and inexperience here, but I've got to learn :)

I'd avoid it, get a pad and pen and sketch an image, scan it in and work from that.

hmm, it's a bit odd to take an image (photo) and use it to create a logo, if you are looking for a vector silhouette i would just use some clipart to create it. what type of thing are you looking for, i might be able to help with some vector clipart for you to play with

Hey Ian, thanks for the offer. It's for a boat club, I was looking for an image of a yacht (sails detail etc.).

Kinda frustrating because I'm pretty sure my illustration skills aren't up to the job. I can draw, but can't transfer that to the computer effectively.
