Default Changes to artwork

(The databse hasn't saved this post correctly, so i'm relaying it here)

Hello everyone,

A few days ago I sent off two seperate art-work files to my printer. The art-work files were for two different print projects - the first, a business card - the second, an A4 prospectus document.

I am very new to designing for print, and I received an e-mail back from my printer with the following request:

Can you please re-supply the art-work files with the black area coverage being: 20 yellow, 20 cyan, 20 magenta and 100 black for the image areas (black coverage should not exceed 250%). The text should always be 100% only. We will also requre 3mm bleed area and crop marks to be put on to all of the attached art-work files.

Now, I essentially have no idea what all of that means! Can someone please provide me with some instruction on how to do this? The art-work files were designed in Adobe InDesign CS3.

Thank you in advance!

Thank you very much for doing that - I wasn't sure what had happened there.

i understand the 3mm bleed and the crop marks need to be on, to put the bleed on simply pull 3mm of colour over the print edge - see Bleed (printing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

referring to the percentages he's on about i'm not quite sure - i think he just means to get the best black mack the values for black 20 yellow, 20 cyan, 20 magenta and 100 black.

any possibility of seeing what the artwork is, i might be able to understand better

Thank you for your reply.

I have uploaded the two art-work files, and they can be found (in "PDF" format) below:

Business Card: http://www.creeight.com.au/'07BusinessCard.pdf
Prospectus: http://www.creeight.com.au/'07Prospectus.pdf

If you can have a look at those and let me know what I am meant to do with the files (as suggested by my printer), that would be great!

Also, as for adding the 3mm bleed - does that just mean that I extend the canvas by 3mm all-around? Also, what about the crop marks?

did you read the wikipedia link and the links in that page? all the info is in there explaining how to add bleed and crop marks.

as for the artwork, i've had a look, and my original thoughts were spot on, just alter the cmyk values for the black to c:20 m:20 y:20 k:100

and you are sorted

Perfect! That all did the trick nicely. I've just sent off the revised art-work files to the printer.

Thank you very much for your help!

It would appear that I'm not that lucky!

I just got a phone call from the printer saying that the bleed marks were not included - although it looks to me like they were.

After reading through various instructions, I found details saying to go to "File", "Print", "Marks And Bleed", click on "Crop Marks" and "Bleed Marks" (with a bleed of 3mm) and then print to 'Adobe PDF'.

I did that to the documents and then sent them off, but apparently they don't have the bleed marks.

What have I done wrong here?

bleed marks?? what the hell? is this a new convention for idiot printers or something? why on earth does he need marks to show him where the bleed is when he has crop marks on the artwork?

Edit: ok, i see what they are, but frankly there is no need for bleed marks unless this guy is a novice printer or something

I got an e-mail back saying that he'd made the necessary adjustments himself - so we're all good.

Thank you very much for your help!

Good for you! In the future it is best to stick with that guy if you will ever need more work to be done. He knows what you need. It would also help if you ask him to say what he really needs in layman's terms.

Lots of luck to ya!
