Smile Fee/ethics question to all

I have (had) a client in which we had done one or two things for (signage and display) and were in the process of developing a logo. Though the two projects were invoiced and paid for, the several (7-10) hours we had spent on logo development have not been. I now have not heard from this client in months, and from word of mouth have heard that they had kind of "strung along" several other businesses in the area, caterers, etc. Is it ok to send them an invoice for say five hours since I can safely assume I am not going to hear back from them or do I just suck it up? Any ideas-experiences would be greatly appreciated!!!

send them the invoice for 5 hours at that rate, and add that a X% late fee will be added for every X days of non payment. send them an updated invoice every x days increasing the price by the X%

After a few months take them to small claims court.

I agree, you need to go after your money. now if you use the late fee idea and the bill raises a decent percentage another option beyond claims court is utilize a bill collecting agency, all they do is buy the debt off of you for a percentage of its worth and assume the debt. at least that way you may possibly get the original amount owed. Whatever you decide to do make sure you project an image that won't entice others to do the same thing to you.
