I think you may have to do this on an isometric grid to avoid extra challenges (& many hours) from perspective. If I understand your problem correctly, you will have to render the photo in a simplified manner using the drawing tool in illustrator. Because you have set up an isometric grid, you can repeat your image easily enough.
To make it look more like a sketch you can use a blue stroke (to give it that technical look) and extend lines beyond their borders. Does this help?
