templates vs. original design

I purchased a domain about five months ago. since then I've gone back and forth, with different templates and my own layouts. I don't know a lot about web design. I know how to edit a template and make a basic web page, and that's about it really. However, I do plan on learning more about it, but right now i want to concentrate more on my graphics, and less web design. But, i also want a website to display my portfolio. So my question is, do I just keep trying to do my own layout in my spare time till i create something that I'm satisfied with, or do I look for a template that will keep my happy for a while?

I have always thought that my company website stinks. If I had to do it over again, I would put up something I love first, not something because it's up.

I hate templates with a passion but if it's all that's on offer if can suit just make sure it's not a business site, you don't want one that someones else has.
