6. How do I give an image a shiny effect like this? I know how to use the gradient tool, but it never comes out like this:

Most are in photoshop called pattern overlay you can download various patterns and even make you own.

The bottom shine is done by copying the corner and shrinking it down then use the gradient tool and drag diagonally from the corner you want the shine.

The old paper effect many people do this using real paper, scan it in and live trace it with a good bit of detail in Illustrator then work with the vector that way.

I'm not sure what you want from the first one, it's just a shape drawn with the pen tool and then with a drop shadow.
