The 'leftunder' refers to the css, which is as follows:

#leftunder {background-image: url(Images/bg2.gif); }

I just feel like their must be a better way of doing this.

Obviously I'm not hugely keen on scrapping the tables and writing the whole layout in css.

If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks
Matt

Question XHTML & CSS - Table cell background.

Hi,

I haven't been very active on this forum yet, because I've had lots of non-website work on over the last few months, so apologies for not having contributed hugely to date. I will try get more involved in the future.

However I have got a small site on the go now, and thought it about time I fully embraced XHTML & CSS rather than plain old HTML 4.0.

I've created a site design I like using tables. The main table is essentially made up of four large cells 2 x 2. In the bottom left cell I would like no content, just a tiled background image that takes up the entire cell .

In XHTML I can't use the background="Images/img.gif" within the 'td' tag if I want valid pages.

I've come up with something, which although strictly is valid, it feels very much like a workaround. This is the code I have for the cell in question:

and lots more br's until the cell is as big as the one next to it. (about 250)

yeah.. I would have to say go CSS all the way man. Drop the tables, you'll be much happier in the end.

starting from scratch, and ditch the tables.

just do a container div, and within that, insert 4 more divs, top_left, top_right, etc.
size them to what you want and float left, then you can create a css rule for each div and do what you want with them.

Code:

thats the css, either within your page or an external, which i prefer. the colours of the boxes are for examples.

Code:

notice how little code there is to perform what you want.
