Do you want to increase the physical size of the image? If not, what would be the reason to increase the resolution? Are you talking dpi or HxW resolution?

It's possible what you're looking for is to "res up" photos. You may want to look into programs like Genuine Fractals. However, file size will increase. Anything that adds resolution data will boost file size.

The other alternative would be techniques for sharpening and clarifying what's in the photo, keeping it at roughly the same size. Since there are a lot of different things which might be wrong with any given photo or graphic, this covers dozens of techniques suited to each problem.

Is it possible to vectorize the image? For some images that could probably work, but if it's a photo it's not a good solution...

I've had good results with Genuine Fractals that D856C mentioned, but as he says, it will increase filesize. Might I ask why you need to keep it down?

Genuine Fractals is great but only works on images that are already fairly decent in clarity and size. For example....you can't take a 1"x2" image at 72DPI and make it twice the size in GF. And straight up interpolating any image isn't a great idea to begin with although some are able to with no problems. You just have to experiment

You can save a raster file as a JPG in high-resolution to drop in. JPGs are compressed at a small size and are still usable as placed files. I don't recommend LZW because of problems in RIPs. TIFs, PSDs and EPS files from Photoshop will always be much larger and EPS/Vector files are the smallest.

LOL!!!! That is so true! We laugh at all of the shows on television that do this. If only that technology existed.

A client once gave me a very tiny JPG of his logo and told me to blow it up and use it in a magazine ad. When I told him it would be extremely fuzzy, he told me to clean it up like they do on CSI. I reminded him that CSI isn't real. :P

I love the scene in Enemy of the State with Will Smith, when the feds take a photo of a person in a store with an ordinary surveillance camera, click a few buttons, and are suddenly able to rotate 360* around the person in the photo and check what's in his back pocket. And zoom in to read it too!
