I honestly believe that in the graphic design world, if everyone does everything by the book, it doesn't help them stand out.
There is the rule of only presenting only 3 logo concepts to a client. Well I think that is totally wrong. Do you know REALLY what the client is looking for? Can you honestly read their minds? Most likely you don't and you can't. Present them more than someone else would. That doesn't mean go crazy by making so many logos that you've wasted time. Make the logos larger so they can see the detailed (or undetailed) work you've put into them. Then make the logos the size as if they would appear on letterhead or a business card. This gives them an idea of how they look smaller. Most of the rules in design, I pretty much throw out the window. And I think that's what makes our company so successful. Anyone can argue with me about breaking design rules, but I have been in business for quite a while, so it's pretty hard to argue with time. Dare to be different. Stop being cattle. That's what creativity is all about. |

I wouldn't consider myself to be an identity specialist by any stretch of the imagination (Web stuff is my main "angle"), but I'd certainly recommend working in Illustrator (or Freehand if you're feeling particularly Old Skool) given the fact that you've got a lot more flexibility in resizing images without losing quality.
If you need the logo for a Web page / PowerPoint / whatever, you can always bring the EPS file you made in Illustrator into Photoshop, and save it out as a bitmap at the relevant size - when you import an EPS in Photoshop it asks you what size you want it, and will do a pretty good job at delivering what you ask!

The major problem is, is getting people when they start to put photoshop away, it's where most people start and it traps them a little.
A bit like web builders who start in Front Page
