Hi, i'm not sure if this is the right place for this but i was reading an new article on Smashmagazine's blog about the new markup standards XHTM2 and HTML5 and i have to admit even with the straighforward explaination and the etertaining comic book delivery i'm still fairly confused about what the effectivly means for web development. Will either of theses standards have any effect CSS3 ? Some of the explanation centered around tags such as <img> and <br> and the need to close these tags or similar tags. I for one dont see the big deal in closing tags, it makes sense and refuse to belive anybody can be to lazy to do this. Also capital letter for TAGS ? what significance if any does this mean for the end resulting web page ? If any of you have any thoughts about this or explantions i would love to hear you oppinions.

XHTML 2 has now been discontinued, however, there will be an XML serialisation (version) of HTML 5. HTML 5 allows for both syntaxes, leaving tags open and closing tags. It really doesn't matter which language you use, the end result will be the same.

Yeah, the only noticeable difference between the XHTML1 and HTML5 that I write is the DTD and the appearance of new elements. I'm actually getting to quite like HTML5 in some aspects.

I've kind of chosen (right or wrong) to ignore the whole HTML5 thing for now. As cool as it looks, it's going to be quite a while before we get full browser support. I mean, IE still hasn't even started thinking about supporting it, as far as I've heard.

Maybe once I can take "test in IE6" off my web design checklist I'll start making the transition...

Yeah it's gonna be ages. No browsers apart from Opera's latest support HTML5's new elements.

I guess I'm always a bit dubious about any new change, you get used to doing things a certain way why rock the boat :P But that's what i thought about CSS layouts as well and low and behold i love it now :)

One question though, why would closing tags become such a pain in the ass that they felt the need to ignore this ?

PS! Thanks for taking the time to explain and providing new insight :)

I saw this yesterday that might shed some light on the subject in a comic book form.

Thats the same article i read today. It did explain the difference, but not the significance of the changes. What do the changes mean for the designer/developer? Should i stop closing tags and start using capital letters for tags ? These are things i just don't see any point in changing. Frankly i feel its a bit lazy, and has potential for bad coding. Having said that i may be wrong. Hence the reason for this thread, i' interested in what people think about this in particular.
