Silhoette

Hey Guys..I'm kind of a newbie to a lot of things in the adobe programs. Right now I'm basically making a silhoette of sorts (like the ones on those old mac ads all black or whatever) over a body in illustrator. The body has one hand on its waist creating a hole and something similar somewhere else on the body.
When i use the pen tool to trace around the body those holes are also filled with black. How do I remove them so that they are see through??

I basically created paths for the two holes and then tried to use the delete button but that wasn't working too well, lol. I'm a bit clueless.

Are you using Adobe Illustrator, or another program?

I know in Adobe, you can trace the 'hole' then select that path, fill it with say white.
Select both the 'hole' and 'silhouette' and in the "Pathfinder" window, under "Shape Modes:" select the "Subtract form Shape Area" button, then click "Expand". Voila!
