Default New Job

I'm been offered a 4 month contract at a local designers, I'm please although a little scared. They do everything in Freehand MX, although I know all the CS products well, Experienced in freehand is just something I risked on my CV now I'm a little nervous. How different is it? Will I survive?

Freehand is pretty similar to Illustrator really, just simplified down a bit.

Going from Illy to Freehand should be easier than going to other way i think

yay, freehand really is the greatest of all design programs.

ok, maybe not but it is really easy to use so i wouldn't worry about it too much.
as i said before it's trying to get used to Illy after freehand that seems difficult
(like i'm trying to do)

i had the opposite thing. going from freehand to illustrator. i wouldn't worry about it, they are fairly similar. freehand is easier to use anyway, altho its not as good. you can always ask them to get you a copy of illustrator.

true! we need more southern folk!

If it gets to a stage where you think you would be better working on illy you could propose to your boss that you should be designing in illy instead and show him the sort of the stuff you can do in illy?

when i started at my company i was given a old mac, photoshop 7 and that was about it. wrote a proposal for new equipment and had a meeting, now got an apple mac book, cs2 suite and go live - whoop whoop

You can open ai files in Freehand but it can't handle certain things very well, like gradients for instance. It's ok for strokes. As for opening Freehand files in Illustrator, I find the best bet is to copy and paste.

I think you should tell your employers how much better Illustrator is. I was a complete Freehand advocate until I started using Illustrator. Now I'm a convert! Also, seeing as Adobe have bought out Macromedia I doubt very much they will even release any new versions of Freehand.
