Default Graphic designer wage UK?

Hi, I'm just starting out doing graphic design. At least, paid graphic design...

I just got asked how much my freelance rate was per hour. This is good. However, I really don't know what to say. This is bad.

I asked a friend and he said designers can charge up to £30 an hour.. and £20 could sound little, depending on the job..

I really just want to quote a number, does £10 sound crazy? I'm just starting, I don't want to scare em off, or make it sound like I'm rubbish. Help! x

It depends how good you are, if you can afford to do it on the cheap when you start off £10 an hour is good to get the work and build up a portfolio. Most logo designers I know charge between £55-90 an hour.

As Toon has said, it really does depend on how good you are. Originally I had unbelievably low prices, but after alot of persuading by relatives etc. I increased charges and even now my prices are low in comparison to other designers/companies prices.

Most seem to charge an hourly rate, although at present I charge a fixed figure.

It still depends on where you are, the economy counts for alot, I have a friend that works in branding near the capital and charges £189 an hour ($387 an hour). So it all depends where you are.

international standards for freelanceing is $25 - $500 per hour.
this doesn't count extra fees and charges.

i did a ton of research when figuring up my price point on international, national, and regional figures and standards. the stats are there... you just have to dig for them.

my price guide is on my home page if your interested to see the flat average for Indiana, USA. if i lived on either US cost i could charge $50 - $120 as my per hour average and still be low... $40 - $80 in Indiana is on the high side a little bit. it's dumb, but region does play as much of a factor in pricing as skill does.
