It does to a certain extent with the growth of the internet I'm able to gain alot more inspiration for work were as before it was mainly through other media.
4. Has there been fundamental changes to the types of design solutions offered because of the advent of affordable technologies?
Not really, web design is the only major change and it is still at a very early stage in it's growth, television ads etc. have remain much the same over the years it's just the trends that change.

Most definitely maybe just a lot slower.

They were already a bit part of it when I joined the industry

Computers only follow the commands of the user, it's really up to us to decide how creative we decide to be.

[quote=Riz;156739]Here are the questions. If you could answer any of these, even if it is briefly i would appreciate it.
1. Your name and your main area of design?
Mark O'Brien, Graphic Designer specialising in web design at the moment
2. What role(s) computers play in your life, in particular, with regard to your design endeavours?
All good ideas and sketches are developed through our design computers
3. How does technology influence design thinking and solutions?
With web design I need to think of the limitations of peoples computers and web browsers to display our client's information correctly. For example I created a design earlier this year with a menu system nicely placed comming out from under a picture. My boss then told me he wanted the picture to be animated in flash. This ment I had to create the menu in flash integrated with the animated picture. The problem with this is if you have a client behind a work firewall who is unable to install the flash player they can't access any information on the website. I had to re design the menu page, separating the animation and creating an html menu so every visitor can access the information.
4. Has there been fundamental changes to the types of design solutions offered because of the advent of affordable technologies?
Yes. More people have access to faster computers and faster internet. This allows me to design websites with less emphasis on size restrictions and more emphasis on aesthetically pleasing content.
5. Could you perform your current design activities without the use of computers?
No
6. How did you begin to appropriate computers for specific tasks?
??
7. How does the use of computers generate new tasks, methods or creative explorations?
Helps with creative explorations by widening your research base (internet) viewing how other people's creative ideas. Tasks aren't generated by the computer - our clients and bosses set them.
8. What kind of design job do you enjoy most?
The creative side, visually designing sexy content. (assembling a website can become frustrating at times)
9. Will you tell me a little bit about yourself?
Live in Manly, Sydney. Like to surf as much as possible and I have a strange desire to learn as many facets of web design as possible.
10. How long have you been in business?
I've been designing since 2003
11. Do you have an office space, or are you home-based?
Work in an office as my primary source of income and work from home infrequently
If someone could post samples of there work that would also help
my work's website is www.beyondadvertising.com.au
1. Your name and your main area of design?
Richard Gray - Graphic Designer - mostly for print and currertly working in-house as a design and marketing executive.
2. What role(s) computers play in your life, in particular, with regard to your design endeavours?
In my job, it's all computers (a PC) to build, collect and create everything. With my freelance (a mac!!!) I tend to use the computer more on some things and less on others. In what ever regard, the computer a composition tool for bring it all together.
3. How does technology influence design thinking and solutions?
I try to keep up on new techniques and breakthroughs but just as much as keeping and discovering old ones. Both have their part. The obvious answer to this would be web, but I think that's a fair to simplified approach. With tighter budgets and a rapidly changing consumer base, new ways and means to target these groups is required. A simple website or brochure might not cut it anymore.
4. Has there been fundamental changes to the types of design solutions offered because of the advent of affordable technologies?
I think the market has been flooded with designers and even more, web designers. There are some real talents in this bunch, but also some truly awful ones as well. It has meant that everyone has had to up their game and that the internet (as a single website) may longer not be the effective marketing route it once was without some additional drive.
On the plus side, I think it's exposed the design world and made it reaccess it's self and streamline. It has brought with it more understanding into the process, so there are some clients who understand what design can do for them more than ever before and what it required to create a brand. Of course, other clients have gone the otherway and believe they know best...
5. Could you perform your current design activities without the use of computers?
One word: No. My drawing is fairly rubbish. I might get there eventually but the computer speeds it up. The whole design is in my head and the computer is merely helping me make that take shape.
6. How did you begin to appropriate computers for specific tasks?
I think it just fell into place with a lot of trial and error. There are some effects and parts of a process that are just easier or more authentic if you use something other than a computer.
7. How does the use of computers generate new tasks, methods or creative explorations?
There is a whole realm of possibilities now out there with computers. I think the real aspect though is the speed at which these things can be integrated and changed. They say nothing is original anymore but I believe that's untrue. It's just harder to find.
8. What kind of design job do you enjoy most?
One with a fairly open but defined brief that requires an opening creative, but that can be build on and adapted over each usage.
9. Will you tell me a little bit about yourself?
A designer with a year and half agency time and non in-house. I've fed the gaps with freelance work.
10. How long have you been in business?
From first job to now? maybe 6 years - but from first agency job just over 2 years...
11. Do you have an office space, or are you home-based?
I work in an office for my main job and have spare room studio for the rest.
Thanks for your replies everyone
