But the default colour for gradient is black,
so how to modify the gradient colour to other colour such as green?

When you make your gradient shape, just double click on the gradient tool in the main toolbar. That'll open up the Stroke/Gradient/Transparency pop up on the right. There you can click on the gradient spectrum colors and change them.

If the color scale is set to Grayscale, you will only be able to choose white trough black.
Change the color scale to RGB or CMYK through the options drop down.

Also, if you have a color that you know you want in the gradient, you can drag and drop that color square into the gradient slider in the box.

Cecilie, I didn't know that! Thank you.
