Nice one tommy, you should have kept the background transparent on the resulting gif :P but i'm picky so ignore me

If you just want simple movement effects, Photoshop is a good tool. It even has a "tween" tool to fill in frames for you.

yeah.. easy enough really, but I just wanted to get the message across on how to do animations in Fireworks. The funny thing, one of the top search engine results for my site is usually Fireworks Animation Tutorial

Photoshop CS3 has Image Ready implemented, since this program isn't in the Creative Suite anymore. I would go for Photoshop as well.
