magaly, it's all good. Sorry if I upset you or came off as rude, don't think this has to go on any further. At the end all of the above is pointless, if the topic starter got turned off by the first few replies and left, bummer but oh well. Hope you saw where i was coming from though, with all the negativity and bs being spewed around.

I wouldn't bother arguing as you've got to see it from 2 points of view, working for non-profit orgs is a great way to build a portfolio but there is also too many people who undervalue a designers work and you usually find the people that get upset about working for free are professionals with bills to pay and want to keep the value of the industry up.

If people can work for free you will usually find they're either....

a) Very quiet and happy to help someone out
b) Still in college and have no bills to pay
c) Not full time designers who work regular jobs and design in their spare time

It's definitely not worth falling out about but I do agree with people putting money aside for marketing reasons, I mean if the non-profit org runs vehicles you wouldn't pull into a gas station and fill up and not pay so it has to be viewed from all points of view.

If Mute can afford to do it free he will have a reason whether it's one of the above or another but the point to take is nobody here is either in the right or the wrong just in different place in their lives. A great chance for a young college designer to put something in their portfolio, but from the lack of responses I would say 90% of the board who are professional designers can't afford to do it for free, not that they don't want to it.

Just for the record.. when people ask about building their portfolio & more importantly credibility, I ALWAYS steer them to non-profits (usually something local to their area).

NO matter which side you're on, a little tact goes a LONG way

and I'd like to point out that a link from a website is not worth much, otherwise you'd be selling them to every one to pay for your design work. Unless you're a PR5+ and in the top 100,000 on Alexa the site link is worth less than a dollar
