Default Your going to kill me: web 2.0 reflection:

I know, it's a nasty thing, but i have someone specifically requesting it so i need to find out how to do it.

I know how to do a web 2.0 (mac) style reflection like so:

But this one (above) is done with a transparent to white gradient.

What i need to know is how do i do this on a patterned background. For example, the background i need the reflection on is a wood style background, how do i get a reflection to look like it is reflecting off the wood?

Many thanks all (im sorry i had to ask )

You take the original layer, duplicate it, then go Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical... And then position it underneath the original layer.

On the layers palette, click the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom. Its quite a concept to get used to, but what you need to remember is where you paint in black, the image is 'masked' out of view. White areas are opaque. Now if you draw a gradient going from Black to White / Pale Grey on this layer mask, you will see your layer will fade away in the direction of the gradient. Adjust the opacity level of this layer to taste...

You mean something like this ?

Just cut the iphone on the edges and duplicate it in your wood textured document. After that cut the lower part (the part you want to be the reflection) and paste it into the wooden textured document.

Ctrl+T to go in "transform" mode and flip it vertically.

Set the opacity to 30% for the lower part of the iphone (reflection).

To the same layer (the reflection layer) add a layer mask, like in the image :

Add a gradient from black to white to the layer mask.

That's about it. You can play a bit with the perspective so you can make the reflection more realistic.

If you're doing it in cs3, even indesign can do gradient feathers now.. a top new feature and much easier than doing them in photoshop and importing. Now if only my ex-boss was less tight to fork out for an upgrade from cs1, he'd have that advantage...
