The first points that strike me is...

1. The Typography is a little weak, as in no real style just plain text.
2. The logo is too dominant

Maybe work on those first

any ideas on how to make the logo less dominant? I hate designing for myself!

True using a slightly smaller cleaner font, such as verdana or ariel. The basic font like times just looks like you've not tried.

Reduce the size of the logo by say around half. Fact is, people will know where they are so its less important to tell them so loudly.

One tip that will help you out greatly, use a 'Lorem ipsum' text from the start. Putting in text while designing will make all the difference.
Have a look at other websites and try to see the design without the text, you will see that content is part of your design.
