Did you do some research on book covers before starting this design? Dogeared Designs has some excellent examples. I think your design is coming along nicely, but not finished.
1. Look at your heirarchy, 1) the gun, 2) the title, 3) the author. Isn't the author usually the most important thing about a book? Most of the time the author's name, especially last name, is in HUGE letters at the top of the novel. The novel title is the second most important. For your design, i think you could make the title larger. Fill up more of the horizontal space you have. 2. On the title, I would say get rid of the fuzzy dropshadow, too. Make it look like burn mark behind the type, or some other way integrate the type into the illustration you've created (nice job on that, btw, good, clean masking on the gun). And what is the shape in the middle of the O in Bourne? I'm not trying to be mean, I really don't see what it is. As creative as making the O into something else is, it might also be too distracting: B O URNE IDENTITY is how it reads. If you're replacing a letter with a small thing, like a target or a bullet hole, I think it would be ok, but the radar circles coming out of it are working against the message. Thought of one more thing: the color. Why pink? If it is supposed to be red, saturate the color a little more. And it might look cool to bring the gun out of the background by leaving it silver.

I think the design came out great. But honestly i looked at this as more of a movie poster, or even as a DVD cover. It might have been fun to see if you could have steered away from the obvious objects when creating this piece. A book cover to me is like a teaser of what's behind the cover, and should lead someone to pick it up with that " what is this about?" question on thier mind. If the cover quickly gives the viewer a run down of what to expect, it then just turns into something nice to look at. Again great job on what you have completed thus far.

It's nice, but you'd be given extra marks for using The Rule of Thirds.

Good design book cover.
Jus a few nit picky points to tighten it up. "the bourn idenity" title could be made to look rougher , i.e. made to look part of the picture. its a bit stand outty at the mo. Maybe something else along with the gun, considering he was smart spy? likea map of some kind to show he travels or something???? |
