Default Labs

Hi all, I'm just after some critique on a new project. It's a labs section on my site so that I can upload any experimental codes/snippets to share.
I'm, at the moment, only after critique with regards the design/layout. Also typos lol, and can anyone suggest an alternative to the current flask icon that I'm using near the top? I haven't tried to validate anything yet, so I'm not sure how it's looking on that front.

CONTENT YET TO COME!

I like the design but I'm not sure the red shows up enough on the dark background

Really. Hmm, everywhere else I've run the design by people, they seem to think it's a great combo. I'll have a look at alternatives. Thanks.

Anyone else?

I like the general design and colors, but I agree on the red. When you are focused on the white and then have the read the red it´s kinda hard. Same goes for the footer text (home | about ....).

Also, the category "other" is in my browser (IE6) placed below "css & xhtml" in a white area.

I quite agree that the dull red doesnt provide much impact. I wuld suggest the shade of turquoise that you used in your logo. That would give the page a more coherent look.

Looks good PR-perhaps too big.
There was a good discussion of what size sites should be recently.

I really like your color palette! Those shades go really well together. I do agree with the above, though the red on black part doesn't work so well for the text. Your typography is really nice too! Beautiful!

I am so sure that it's not displaying exactly right in IE6 (work won't let me install anything else /cry), so take this with a grain of salt: I would move the navigation up, make it a whole bar and tuck it right under the black header area. The dark on light tan buttons just don't work for me (as in design, not navigational issues). And is that white area below the two buttons, "CSS and xHTML" and "PHP...", intentional or is it an IE bug? Like I said, I'm on IE6 and I'm sure most people will be on FF.

The beaker reminds me of Google Labs...

Well that's how the nav etc is supposed to look:

I get from (almost) all of you that the red doesn't work. And I shall be honest, this is the only forum that's made issue with it. Can I now ask for alternative colours to the red.

Thanks, Harry

P.S. I really like the red.

You know, I've looked at it again (now at home on FF. Yay!) and I on this monitor the red doesn't look as bad as it did at work. But that's still a problem, unfortunately, because for some users it will look like my monitor at work. If you're more interested in looking good than usability, keep the red. But consider your audience! I'm not trying to be hostile or bash your design, but I think it's a bad idea to keep the red :/

I still think the nav should go above. But that's my personal opinion, too.

I think the site will be really cool once it's finished! Let us know when you're ready to have people really start visiting so we can stop by!
