The main issue is there's no real focal point the eye's are drawn more to the red circle which isn't even part of the type
Hi, i'm new here and I need some feedback :)
The assignment in my intro class was to create a grid and make a set of letter-like forms based off the grid. Then I had to create a poster using the "letters". Only two colors are allowed.
So this is where I am at the moment. My class didn't give me the most informative critique and I just feel stuck. I believe I should be finding a way to tighten the elements of the poster together.
Where would you say I should go from here?
oh yeah, and this is more of a visual project than one that involves any sort of strict content or theme.

Hierarchy is what a couple people have said, but I just don't know exactly what they mean or how to go about doing it
A hierarchy in design means: what element is most important, what is least important, and how you want the viewer's eye to travel across the piece. I agree with Toon's observation that the type is not the focal point in this piece, but the circle is.
If you ask yourself these questions (credit to Creative Curio) you will have a stronger design solution.
Hope this helps.
- Does the piece I want to take center stage overwhelm the layout?
- Do other elements in my layout appear weak next to the focal point? If so, how can I use the elements and principles of design to strength them?
- Have I used enough instances of noticeable shapes and colors so that they are not distracting?
- Are any objects too overwhelming to the page? How can I use the principles and elements to decrease the visual weight of those objects?

I don't really know what it is i'm meant to be looking at. What about making up a certain shape or form using the type?

well I tried creating a shape out of the elements, but I am iffy about it
I also tried fixing up the other idea, but I think I failed so far, lol
Thanks for all your advice though, it's good advice....I just suck at applying it ;)

hmm, actually it doesn't need to be diagonal
sorry, I'm just so sick of the other design that I had to try something else for the moment, but I'll get back to it
another one

OKay, that top one isn't so bad really. I know absolutely zip about typography and even less about building posters...but when I look at that, my eyes focus on the center object and move all the way around the design. Not bad.
