Thread: Full CSS layout tutorial

    Full CSS layout tutorial

Sure there are tutorials about making a two column container. And there are lots of tutorials about each element going into the container -- the navigation, or text or images.

Creating a CSS layout from scratch is about going through the whole process. You start with a concept image, and then the thinking process of structuring the divs for it.

Pretty good for seeing the forest for all the CSS 'trees'.

    Good find.

    Love this bit...

Note: Please use a modern browser such as Opera, Firefox, or Safari for this exercise. Don't worry though, your site should work in IE at the end of it.

Excellent link, i started off using layers for positioning my layouts but became frustrated with differing results across different browsers... So I went back to tables (sorry!). This tutorial looks like it may help me understand things better so i'll give it a go!

I've just followed it quickly from start to finish and it is without a doubt the easiest tutorial to learn basic hand-coding, all the people here that say they want to understand it more, do the tutorial. You can do it in under 20 minutes and it explains things quite well.

The only bad part was the hack for IE/Mac. You can skip that bit!!

Skip it because its unneccesary? Or because its for IE?

If I had to guess it's because Microsoft has advised Mac users of Internet Explorer (IE) to switch to rival browsers such as Apple's Safari.

I've read some sites estimate IE/mac users at .5% -- although I've heard academic use of IE/mac is higher. The basic estimate is that IE/mac has dropped off the charts.

Because it's mac, if people are still using IE for mac they must be so far behind the times they probably wouldn't notice if the site was broken in places.

Some aspects of the new release of IE are just plain annoying: If you come to a page with a flash item, such as a menu, you first have to click on it to activate it before you can start using it! Only a minor thing but it just seems completely unnecessary. Tend to use firefox more than anything now!

that's why everyone should embed the flash with js to get around that annoying activation.
