I'll scan interesting items into PS and then make outlines to export to Illy. A good example is a rough spot on a photo....It won't always look the same in Illy, but lots of them come out looking pretty cool.
I am interesting in the range of methods people use to create decayed/roughened textures on their photoshop and illy work?
I've been known to try and scan if from a live source for photoshop...
what about you lot?

ummmm, if I were a mod.. I'd say PUDDEN-HEAD!!!!
get a white sheet of paper and some paint (any colour but not white) get some paint on your brush and brush it of until your nearly painting nothing...then paint onto the white sheet a few strokes, leave to dry, scan in and make outlines in illy or mess around with in photoshop....it can work a treat!
i take photograph's and use those as textures. i find concrete stains, colors, and patterns to be extremely useful.
in illustrator, for a grunge effect, generally i'll livetrace a texture, and then use the resulting mess in combination with the pathfinder tool.
if it's photographs i'm going to use, it's going to be really detailed and large photographs.
ie: a picture of a building, that way the range of colours is immense. then bring it into photoshop work on the colour balance...
all of the above + grunge brush sets + photos.
I got a decent DSLR not too long ago, first things i did were run into backgarden and take a picture of some soil, onto driveway and take pic of brickwork and tarmac...
Next purchase is definately a new PC, graphics on a 15.4 inch screen is getting annoying. Then I want a DSLR :) Bought a scanner last week though, gotta make me some brushes
