General Japanese Graphic Design and Culture Questionnaire

Hi everyone I'm new to this forum (first post).

I've been into Japanese Pop Culture (meaning the general entertainment and modern style and design) for around 8 years. I started watching anime etc then manga and the films etc and I've also been into Japanese graphic design for awhile now.

Anyways now I'm at uni studying Graphic Design and I have based my dissertation on Japanese Pop Culture/Graphic design/anime and manga and why its becoming so popular and influential towards western culture and I was hopefully wondering if you guys here could help me out by answering this questionnaire with your thoughts and opinions.

1. What are your views of Japanese Pop culture and its differences compared to western culture (america, europe etc)?

2. What do you prefer about Japanese Pop culture and what energy does it have that is different to western pop culture?

3. What are you view on Japanese Graphic Design and its impact in graphic design as a whole?

4. Have you been influenced by Japanese graphic design? If so which Japanese designers/companies?

5. What influences do you see in Western graphic design that has been the through the cause of Japanese graphic design?

6. Who are you favourite Japanese graphic designers? What do you like about them?

1. What are your views of Japanese Pop culture and its differences compared to western culture (america, europe etc)?

I would say the Japanese Pop culture is still very much based on tradition and fantasy.

2. What do you prefer about Japanese Pop culture and what energy does it have that is different to western pop culture?

I don't prefer it due to it's more fantasy based methods

3. What are you view on Japanese Graphic Design and its impact in graphic design as a whole?

I think it would be better if they treated Design as Design and Art as Art and stop trying to mix the 2 in nearly everything they do.

4. Have you been influenced by Japanese graphic design? If so which Japanese designers/companies?

Ikko Tanaka, mainly for great and clear poster designs

5. What influences do you see in Western graphic design that has been the through the cause of Japanese graphic design?

I would say the impact of original Japanese movie posters are clearly visible now in alot of western movie posters.

6. Who are you favourite Japanese graphic designers? What do you like about them?

Again, Ikko Tanaka, mainly for great and clear poster designs
