Default InDesign or Quark or both?

Hi,

I've just started my Graphic Design degree (I'm a complete novice when it comes to the programmes used) and there was a discussion today about InDesign and Quark. I took it that Quark was the industry standard but others seemed to have differing views. I will buy Quark, as we get it at a really good price, but what I'd like to know is if there is any point in getting, and familiarising myself with, InDesign too?

Thanks in advance for your help.

K x

I use both but love the handshaking between the Adobe CS software.
Quark didn't really have a real competitor (Aldus?) until Indesign came out and now they are working hard to improve their product and add more free 3rd party software to regain their market share.

I've picked up a really bad habit of starting a logo design in Illy and then designing all the rest in it as well and it's not really a good idea.

ID. But don't sell yourself short by getting rid of Quark. If you have experience using both, you'll have a better chance to get the job over someone who doesn't use both.

Thanks all for the replies! Really appreciated. Great insight to know that I won't be wasting time or money getting to grips with both.
Someone did mention that Quark were upping their game, so to speak, and will be launching a new version soon but I got the general concensus that ID was far more user friendly.

Thanks again!

p.s - Sorry totally missed the 'Design Software' section...ooops!

Thanks again : )

There are stalwarts in charge of some company's who refuse to abandon Quark, so as Cwilk says learning both would be in your best interests! InDesign every time for me though
